E. mac

Eimeria macusaniensis(E.mac) is a protozoan parasite that affects camelids(Alpacas/Llamas).  It is similar to coccidia that we see in other farm animal species. Although it can be seen in all ages of camelids, young ones seem to be more susceptible.  The life cycle can take from 32 to 36 days before clinical signs may be seen. Unlike coccidia infections in other species, diarrhea and colic are uncommon.  With the lack of gastric and intestinal signs, and the time period from ingestion to when clinical signs occur sets it apart.

It is one of the most common causes of weakness, weight loss and ill thriftiness that can affect camelids.  A fecal flotation test can help to determine if the parasite is in the feces.  Severe sickness and death can occur also.

There is treatment along with supportive care.
